The Nine - Eight axle

Draft: I'll building this after my CJ is trail ready

I'm getting ready to make a Ford 9" axle with 8 lugs.
It'll have semi floating axle shafts with 8 lug bolt axle and 35 splines.
Cost is about the same as you building a SF Dana 60, but much lighter and bolt in!
Yeah the Pinion will be lower, but I'll take that for now.
I've searched the web and haven't found any info on this type of axle, so if you've an info please contact me.
Everything now look do-able, just hope the seal will work.

Parts needed:

  • Housing from a 1970's half ton Ford 9" axle.
    - Wheel Mounting Surface to Wheel Mounting Surface must be 65"
    - or Housing end to Housing end must be 6?" wide.

  • Brakes: Your on your own (lots of $$$)

Basic Kit Parts:  NEB001

  • 2 each: Axle shafts with 8 lugs

  • 2 each: Wheel bearings & retainer rings                  (Comes pressed on to axle)

  • 2 each: Inner seal for 9" housing.

Bolt in Kit Parts:  NEBI01

  • 1 each: Spool, Ford 35 spline for small bearings    (Will fit a 3.06 or 2.96 case only)

  • 2 each: Axle shafts with 8 lugs

  • 2 each: Wheel bearings & retainer rings                  (Comes pressed on to axle)

  • 2 each: Inner seal for 9" housing.

Bolt in Kit Parts:  NEBIN1

  • 1 each: Spool, Ford 35 spline for large bearings    (Will fit a 3.06 or 2.96 case only)

  • 2 each: Axle shafts with 8 lugs

  • 2 each: Wheel bearings & retainer rings                  (Comes pressed on to axle)

  • 2 each: Inner seal for 9" housing.

  • 1 each: Nodular 3rd member with 3.25 bearing, complete.

wheel mounting surface - wms is ~65"

Notice it's not the banjo style, but the later stronger style.

Spool, Ford 35 spline for small bearings 3.06 or 2.96 end caps.  You could reuse your bearing if they are recently new.

Found on eBay, but a Yukon Gear product # 2185.  ~$140.00

Look at the upgrade section if your running lots of torque and like to use the skinny pedel.

Brakes:  Your on your own.

If you don't know what to do, I suggest finding a shop to help you.

Assemble of the Parts, coming someday.

Start by stripping the housing, now is a good time to clean and paint the housing.  See below notes on how to prep and paint.

 x
x Add the 35 spline spool to the 3rd member & setup gears.
Add the 3rd member to housing  x
x Add the seals to the housing
Add the shafts to the housing  x
x Completed 35 spline, 8 lug Ford 9" axle, minus brakes.

    Shaving the 9", coming someday.

Shaving the housing is a good mod to do when the housing is out of the vehicle.  It will give it a nice smooth bottom and gain just over 1 1/4" clearance.  Less than a Dana 44!

Right is my inspiration, done by Todd Z.

Common upgrades to this and other 9" axles

Ford_3rd_3.25.jpg (30559 bytes) 3rd member Nodular housing to hold 3.25" size bearings.

Note: The stock 3rd member is weak and a common failure with larger tires, 3rd member upgrade is a good idea.

Dayton Pinion housing & bearing vs a standard support.
A Dayton pinion has same size outer bearing as the standards supports, but the inner bearing is much larger, and the inner webbing much stronger.  This is a good upgrade if you upgrade to a Nodular housing or not.

Spool, Ford 35 Spline for using 3.25" bearings

Note: This is why this swap will work.  The include angle for the splines on the Ford 35 spool is the same as the Dana 60.  The shafts will fit the spool!

Lockers: There are other options, I like just these two.

Detroit Locker, Left picture.
- 100% Heavy Duty automatic locking differential

ABR, Right picture.
- ARB Air Locker manual 100% locking differential

Detroit Locker 9inch.jpg (39679 bytes)air_locker.jpg (48773 bytes)
Hi9fromSide.jpg (140520 bytes) True Hi9 housing & gears

They have 4.11, 4.57, 4.86, 5.14, and 5.38 gears.  This is the ONLY high pinion differential with the third bearing on the pinion and a thrustblock ring gear support.

This will bolt into this custom axle and is a great upgrade.  Now, if only TrueHi9 would donate a 3rd member to show how this would be the ultimate axle! ;~)

OK, so you like this idea.  Best part is you can leave your current 9" axle housing in place and just add bolt on parts!
So, who sell a kit?  Right now it's just an idea in my head.
However, Hopefully I know a guy who get a kit together...
